His equipment consisted of a cask of fire extinguishing liquid in a pewter chamber of gunpowder and to ignite this he used a system of fuses to explode the gunpowder to scatter the fire extinguishing liquid or the solution. Though it could only be used to a limited extent its efficiency in stopping a fire in London was reported in Bradley\u2019s Weekly Messenger in November 1729.<\/p>\n<p>Next came the first portable pressurized fire extinguisher \u201cExtincteur\u201d invented by one British Captain George William Manby in 1813. His apparatus consisted of a copper vessel of three gallons (13.6 Liters) of pearl ash (Potassium Carbonate) solution contained within compressed air that expelled the liquid onto the fire.<\/p>\n<p>Then in 1872 American inventor, Thomas J Martin was awarded a Patent for an improvement in the fire extinguisher.<\/p>\n<p>In this risky competitive undertaking, a new method was introduced by a Frenchman. Francois Carlier in 1866. He mixed the solution of water and sodium bicarbonate with tartaric acid to produce the propellant CO2 gas. When tartaric acid was mixed with the bicarbonate solution carbon dioxide gas was ejected with the pressurized water.<\/p>\n<p>Then in 1881 another new method of fire extinguishing called cartridge operated extinguisher was invented by Read &amp; Campbell of England which used water or water-based solution.<\/p>\n<p>In 1904 a Russian named Aleksandr Loran invented another method called chemical foam extinguisher based on his previous invention of firefighting foam. He used a solution of sodium bicarbonate in water and a solution of aluminum sulfate mixed and by inverting the unit the two liquids reacted to create a frothy foam and carbon dioxide gas which expelled the foam in the form of a jet.<\/p>\n<p>The Pyrene Manufacturing Company of Delaware in 1910 introduced a system using carbon tetrachloride (CTC or CCI4) but by 1950 doctors and scientists exposed the chemical toxicity of the system that damages the neuron system and internal organs; thus, carbon tetrachloride fire extinguisher was withdrawn in the same year.<\/p>\n<p>So, the first modern, harmless but effective fire extinguisher invented by the British inventor George William Manby is in use.
